Create, rename, move and delete notes, folders and spaces; icons; the sidebar and its keyboard controls; narrowing the sidebar; importing and exporting markdown
Notes live in folders, and folders live in spaces (see Getting started for how these fit together). Almost everything on this page happens in the sidebar.
The sidebar lists the spaces you can see in the current organisation. Click a note to open it. Click a space to open or close it and show its overview page. Click a folder to show its overview page; to open or close the folder in the sidebar, hover its icon until it turns into an arrow and click the arrow.
Right-click a space, folder or note to open its menu (on a touch screen, press and hold it). The menu has everything you can do with it: on a space or folder, New note (N) and New folder (Shift+N) first, then opening, sharing, publishing, renaming, exporting and deleting.
Small icons after a name tell you more about it:
Icon | Meaning |
|---|---|
Globe | Published as a site (see Publishing sites) |
People | Shared via a link (see Sharing and permissions) |
Speech bubble and a number | Open comment threads on the note |
Branch | Pushed from a git repository with the kribble CLI; change it there |
When other people add, move or rename things, your sidebar catches up on its own after a short while.
Note or folder: right-click the space or folder it should go in and choose New note or New folder, or press N or Shift+N with it focused. Type a name and press Enter; press Esc to cancel. The new item goes at the end of the list.
From an overview page: open a space or folder and click New note or New folder.
Space: click the + next to Spaces at the top of the sidebar (Create space), or New space on the home page. In a team organisation, creating spaces needs permission (see Sharing and permissions).
Choose Rename from the item's menu in the sidebar (or press F2 with the item focused), type the new name and press Enter. You can also rename a note by editing its title at the top of the note, and a space from the ⋯ menu on its card on the home page too.
Notes and folders can have an icon, chosen from the Lucide set. Choose Change icon from the item's menu in the sidebar, or click the icon spot left of a note's title (or a folder's name on its overview page). Type in Search icons... to find one, click it to set it, or click Remove icon to go back to the default. The icon shows in the sidebar, on overview pages and in the home page's Recently updated list.
A note's description is the line under its title. Click it to write one; it shows under the note's name on overview pages and in search results. A space's description is edited in the space's settings (see Sharing and permissions) and shows on its card on the home page.
Drag items in the sidebar to move them. Hover a row and grab the dotted handle at its left edge, then drop:
above or below another item to put it there
onto the middle of a folder to put it inside that folder
onto a space's name to put it at the top of that space
A line or outline shows where the item will land. You can move notes and folders between spaces of the same organisation, as long as you're a member of both. Folders move with everything in them.
On a space's or folder's overview page you can also drag the cards in Contents to change their order.
Notes pushed from a git repository can't be moved here; move them in the repository instead.
Choose Delete from the item's menu in the sidebar (or press the Delete key with the item focused) and confirm. Deleting a folder deletes everything in it, and deleting a space deletes every note and file in it.
Deleting can't be undone. There is no trash. If you might need the content later, export it first (see below).
Press Ctrl+E (⌘+E on a Mac) to move the focus to the sidebar, or click an item. Then:
Key | What it does |
|---|---|
↓ and ↑ | Move to the next or previous item |
→ | Open a closed folder or space; on anything else, move down |
← | Close an open folder or space; otherwise move to the parent |
Enter or Space | Open the item (and open or close a folder) |
Home and End | Jump to the first or last item |
F2 | Rename |
Delete | Delete (on a Mac keyboard, Fn+Delete) |
N | New note in the focused folder, or next to the focused note |
Shift+N | New folder in the same place |
When you work in one corner of a large organisation, you can narrow the sidebar so it shows only that space or folder.
Right-click the space or folder in the sidebar and choose Scope sidebar here.
The sidebar now lists only that space or folder, and a bar at the top shows where you are, for example All › Engineering › Runbooks. Everything else works as usual: create, rename, drag and drop inside it. Folders inside it have Scope sidebar here too, to narrow further.
Click the back arrow at the left of the bar to go up one level, click any earlier name in the bar to go to it, or click All or the × (Show all spaces) to see every space again.
If the note you have open is outside the narrowed part (for example, you opened it from search), a line under the bar says The open page is outside this scope. Click Show all to widen the sidebar again.
Kribble remembers the narrowed sidebar separately for each organisation, in this browser. Switching organisations shows that organisation's own setting. Another browser or computer has its own, and a private browsing window forgets it when you close it. If the space or folder is deleted, or you lose access to it, the sidebar goes back to showing everything.
You can bring in markdown files from another tool, a git repository or an earlier export.
Right-click a space or folder in the sidebar and choose Import Markdown.
Pick a single .md file or a .zip of them.
Kribble reports how many notes and folders it imported, and names any files it couldn't import.
A single .md file becomes one note, named after the file. A .zip keeps its folder structure: each directory becomes a folder and each .md file a note. Kribble also reads:
front matter at the top of a file (name, description, icon and order), which sets the note's name, description, icon and position
a _folder.md file in a directory, which sets that folder's name, description, icon and order
images in _assets/ directories that notes link to, which are uploaded with them
relative links between .md files, which become links between the new notes
This is the format Kribble's own exports and the kribble CLI use. Each file can be up to 5 MB, and the whole upload up to 55 MB.
A note: right-click it in the sidebar › Export .md downloads it as a markdown file with front matter. Its images stay on the server and are linked from the file.
A folder: right-click it › Export .zip downloads the folder and everything in it.
A space: right-click it › Export as .zip downloads the whole space.
A .zip export includes the images and uses the format described above, so you can import it again here or on another Kribble server. To copy a note's text without downloading a file, use Copy as in the top bar (on a phone, in its ⋯ menu; see Writing notes). For PDFs, see Exporting PDFs.
